What Is Necrobiotic Xanthogranuloma (NXG)?

NXG is a rare, chronic skin disorder characterized by lesions most commonly appearing around the eyes and on the trunk. It is strongly associated with plasma cell disorders, particularly MGUS.

NXG belongs to a group of conditions called non-Langerhans cell histiocytoses. Only about 250 cases have been formally diagnosed worldwide, and diagnostic delays of months or years are common. Most physicians have limited experience with NXG.

Treatment is individualized and often targets the underlying plasma cell disorder. Documented approaches include IVIG, corticosteroids, and plasma cell-directed therapies. Most evidence comes from case series and single-center reports, which is exactly why a patient registry matters.
